Moving a Unifi OS Server to another Unifi OS Server

In my conversions from VMware to XCP-NG, some conversions are very simple, but ubuntu does NOT make the conversion easy [see my other posts to understand why].

In this case, it’s easier to reload Ubuntu 24.04, put the latest UniFi OS server on it. I won’t go into that part as there are plenty internet sites with this information.

There was an issue with UniFi OS Server version 5.1.40. This causes the local apps, Network and InnerSpace to not update correctly. You need to upgrade the UniFi OS Server to 5.1.42, then you can update the latest Network and InnerSpace apps.

  • On the original UniFi OS Server, login and head to the [SETTINGS] page (looks like a gear on the left side).
  • Look for [UniFi OS Server] on the left side bar, under that should be [Control Plane]. Click on [Control Plane]
  • This will bring you to the Control Plane that has 3 choices on top. Click on [Backups].
  • Look for the [Download Backup], Click on the [Download Backup]
  • You will now get a panel that has a check mark for “Backup for All Applications and Settings”. Leave it selected and click on the [Download] button
  • At this point, we recommend you shutdown the old UniFi OS Server if your new one will reuse the same IP address.

You now have a local copy of your settings for the entire UniFi OS Server.

To restore, I recommend this method because you need to get the new UniFi OS Server to the match the old systems versions.

  • Create your new UniFi OS server [directions are all over the internet]
  • When setting up the new UniFi OS Server, name it “TEMP UniFi OS Server” so it can appear in your main UniFi Site Manager.
  • Login to the newly created TEMP UniFi OS Server and run all updates. Make sure to match and load all Apps as needed.
  • With your newly updated TEMP UniFi OS Server, head to the [SETTINGS] page [looks like a gear on the left side.
  • Look for [UniFi OS Server] on the left side bar, under that should be [Control Plane]. Click on [Control Plane]
  • This will bring you to the Control Plane that has 3 choices on top. Click on [Backups].
  • Look for the [Restore from Backup] button, click on it.
  • on the far Right, you will see the [Upload Backup File], click on it
  • Click on browse, select your backup file you created above, the UniFi OS Server will restore to match your old servers settings. It may reboot.

Your welcome,
